Summary
As cool as Samsung’s foldable phones are, their price tags are decidedlynot cool. We’ve long preachedthat you don’t need to buy a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip brand new, and now you’ll have a more official and dependable option for buying a second-hand foldable.
That’s the promise of Samsung’s “Certified Re-Newed” program. It’s not a new thing, but it’s previouslyonly been for Samsung’s non-foldable devices. For the first time, you can now get a Z series foldable through the program. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are the first to get the Re-Newed treatment, and they’re available right now fromSamsung’s website.

Let’s start with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the big book-style foldable. Through the Certified Re-Newed program, it gets a certified new battery and is repaired with 100% genuine Samsung parts. You can get the Re-Newed Z Fold 5 for $1,169 for the 256GB model or $1,219 for the 512GB model. That’s a savings of over $800 compared to the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Then there’s the Z Flip 5, the more pocketable foldable. The Re-Newed Z Flip 5, with its new battery and parts, comes in Graphite and starts at $649 for the 256GB model and $699 for the 512GB model. This time around, you’re looking at a savings of around $450 compared to the new Galaxy Z Flip 7. The best part is that both devices come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, so that you can feel a little more confident in your purchase.

Currently, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in Mint condition starts at around $650 onSwappa. Mint condition Galaxy Z Flip 5s are going foraround $400. The Certified Re-Newed program comes with more reassurances than eBay or Swappa, but you may absolutely get better prices at either of those places. It’s just a matter of what you feel comfortable with.
Regardless, it’s great that Samsung is finally offering foldable devices in its Certified Re-Newed program. This is yet another sign that foldables are maturing and becoming more like standard smartphones.
