Hints for Today’s Wordle

Here are some hints to help you guess the answer without giving away too much:

What Is Today’s Wordle Answer?

The answer to the Wordle on April 11th is:Louse.

Merriam-Webster defines louseas"any of various small wingless usually flattened insects (orders Anoplura and Mallophaga) parasitic on warm-blooded animals," or “any of several small arthropods (such as abook louse) that are not parasitic.” It can also be a verb, in which case it means “to remove lice.”

The first definition covers headlice and other related parasitic insects, but the second definition also encompasses countless species that aren’t even insects. Take thewood louse, as an example. They’re technically a type of crusteacean commonly called an isopod, and they vaguely resemble an armadillo. They mostly eat decaying plant matter and aren’t a threat to humans. However, if you see them in your home, it may be a sign you have a moisture problem.

Louse passed into contemporary English from the Old English word “lus,” which itself came directly from the Proto-Indo-European word “lus.” Consequently, many languages have a word that closely resembles louse or lus, like the German word “laus.”

Mathematicians, linguists, and cryptographers have all attempted to suss out which word is the best to start a Wordle, and there are plenty of well-reasoned opinions out there. A duo of researchers from MITpublished a paperthat concluded that salet is the best first word you can pick. The New York Times itself recommendsslate, crane, or trace. A programmer, Tyler Glaiel, narrowed it down to roate and raise. So, if you’re looking just to try some words out, consider:

If you don’t want to use those, however, here are some ways to pick your own openers.

I typically start with the word raise for those reasons, and that is a choicebacked by some number crunchers. A good second guess depends on how well your first word did. If you got nothing with raise, for example, you should just assume that O and U are the vowels in the word and guess accordingly.
