The EV9 Is Practical, Affordable, and Extremely Comfortable

Back in 2020, Kia debuted the Telluride, a mid-size, three-row SUV that blew us away from day one with how thoughtfully built it was. Now, a couple of years later, Kia has applied the same ideology to the new EV9 mid-size electric SUV, and it is just as impressive in every way.

The mid-size electric SUV segment is still fairly small, with new models slowly entering the market. In terms of pricing, the EV9 sits on the average line. However, in classic Kia fashion, this three-row SUV comesloaded with standard featuresthat more than justify its price tag.

The Korean automaker hasn’t made too many major changes to the EV9 for the 2025 model year, but there are some minor revisions. The Light Long Range trim now comes equipped with a sunroof as standard equipment. Ivory Silver Gloss, Ivory Silver Matte, and Ocean Blue Matte paint options have been discontinued and replaced with Glacial White Pearl and Ebony Black.

Which Trim To Choose

The EV9 comes in a number of different forms, with individual interior packages and increasing levels of performance as you climb the trim ladder. We would definitely skip the base Light model with the smaller battery pack, at least opting for the extended-range model. Top trims, while good, are a little too expensive for something in this class.

We think that the Wind model represents a really good middle ground, offering a great package of features for the price that you pay. It gets a more powerful all-wheel drive powertrain, second-row captain’s chairs, an improved climate control system, and heated front seats and steering wheel. You also get some additional driver assist features.

Warranties and Maintenance

Kia, along with its cousin Hyundai, offer the best powertrain warranties in the business, lasting a whopping ten years. The peace of mind that this offers is something that can’t really be understated. Its limited warranty is also pretty competitive. Unfortunately, unlike Hyundai, Kia doesn’t offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance with your purchase.

Easily the most important factor in the world of electric vehicles right now is range. Being confined to a limited distance and inconvenient charging times are the only things holding EVs back from dominating the market. The EV9, however, offers one of themost impressive rangesof any EV on the market.

There are a number of powertrain arrangements for the EV9. The base Light model comes with a single motor, outlined above. Upgrade to the Light Long Range and you get a bigger battery but drop to 201 horsepower. The all-wheel drive dual-motor Land and Wind models are much more powerful, shown above. Get the GT-Line model and torque gets boosted up to 516 pound-feet.

While the rear-wheel drive models aren’t as quick as all-wheel drive models when accelerating, you’ll find that they still feel perkier than most mid-size gas-powered SUVs. All-wheel drive models offer ridiculous performance for the price you pay. Most impressively, though, the EV9 offers a smooth and reined ride that will keep you and the whole family comfortable on longer journeys.

The Light Standard Range model, which is the most affordable model, comes fitted with a 76.1-kWh battery pack, which is why it can only go 230 miles on a single charge. Every other model in the lineup comes with a 99.8-kWh battery instead, allowing them to get you pretty far before you’ve got to recharge again. The Light Long Range is the best model for those who want the best range, but the e-AWD models aren’t that far behind.

Every 2025 EV9 uses Kia’s 800-volt electrical architecture, which allows it to charge pretty quickly when you run out of juice. While the 11-kW on-board charger isn’t all that impressive, the 230-kW DC charger allows you to tack on an additional 100 miles of range in just 13 minutes, according to Kia. The EV9 is among the fastest-charging EVs currently available on the market.

Kia’s EV9 Offers a Spacious Interior For The Whole Family

Something that Kia has done really well when it comes to its three-row SUVs is making sure that the seats in the way-back are actually comfortable. Where the rear seats often feel like an afterthought, Kia prioritizes comfort for all passengers. This is just one of the many ways the EV9 optimizes its interior for families.

Cargo Capacity (Behind Third Row)

20.2 Cubic Feet

Depending on which trim you go for, the EV9 has space for either six or seven adults. This is dependent on whether or not you get a bench or captain’s chairs in the second row, with the third row only having two seats. All three rows are pretty comfortable, with enough space for most fully grown adults. Cargo capacity is very impressive, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 43.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and 81.7 cubic feet behind the front row.

Kia has been killing it lately when it comes to interior quality, and the EV9 is the perfect example. High-quality materials are used throughout the cabin and seats are covered in synthetic leather upholstery. Heated, ventilated, and massaging seats are also available in the first and second row, which is fantastic for a mainstream car.

Infotainment and Technology

As has become pretty standard in a number of new cars, particularly EVs, the EV9 combines a pair of 12.3-inch screens which sit atop the dashboard. The two screens share a bezel to create flowing, uninterrupted digital real estate. One operates as the digital gauge display and the other as the infotainment system. The only thing separating them is another small screen which displays HVAC information.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, with lower trims requiring a wired connection and top trims coming with wireless integration. Kia allows you to use your smartphone as a key for the EV9, also giving you access to key vehicle controls through their app. A 14-speaker Meridian sound system is also available on the range-topping models.
