The PPSSPP emulator version 1.19 is a major update that brings a lot of fixes to several PSP games. It also marks the end of the PPSSPP Gold app for iPhone, and if you have that, you’ll need to move over your data in the future.
For iOS users, the PPSSPPGold app has been discontinued. Gold features are now part ofthe main PPSSPP appas an in-app purchase. The team is working on a way to transfer existing Gold users to the new system smoothly, but a solution has not yet been found. So you’re going to have to wait patiently while all that is fixed, but it likely will be fast since it has to do with payments.
There are some changes for other platforms as well. Older Macs can no longer use Vulkan due to issues causing black screens and freezes. Linux users get portable file dialogs, while Android has better mouse input with separate button mapping and optimizations for working with Android Scoped Storage. Mac and iOS users get a fix for font display issues, and the emulator now renders at the correct resolution on newer Macs.
Graphics and performance have been significantly improved. The developers fixed long-standing visual issues, such as smoke effects inJak’n’Daxter, using a solution originally made forRatchet & Clank. A new software depth buffer feature has been added to fix lens flares in games likeMidnight Club LA,Wipeout, andSyphon Filter. Several crashes related to graphics have also been fixed.
PPSSPP is a great emulator, but I have had graphical issues while playingAvengers Ultimate Alliance 2,and it sounds like this update would have fixed them. So, if you’ve had trouble in some areas with your games, I’d try playing again to see if they’re fixed.
General emulation is most important to me and many others, andthis has also seen major upgrades. Users can now disable High-Level Emulation (HLE) for specific modules, with initial support for sceCcc and, more importantly, scePsmf modules. This fixes several compatibility problems, including a crash inSocom Fireteam Bravo 3. Other improvements include better module loading, more accurate sleep function handling on Windows, and the ability to replace game icons with custom textures.
Alongside these fixes was a key change that prevents fast-forwarding when networking is active to avoid desynchronization. This seems smart because I’ve accidentally fast-forwarded a few times, and I can imagine it would screw up multiplayer.
Multiplayer features have been expanded with new infrastructure multiplayer support, including automatic DNS setup. This lets you connect to revived online servers for supported games, a feature previously only available in community-made versions.
