Mozilla is shutting down Pocket, its read-it-later app and browser extension, and Fakespot, the service for checking fake Amazon product reviews. Pocket will shut down on June 16, 2025, but you’ll be able to export your data for a few more months after that.
The company said the main reason for closing Pocket is that people’s web browsing habits have changed, and the team working on Pocket will now move to other projects that better match what internet users need today. Mozilla isalso closingits review analysis tool, Fakespot, effective July 25, 2025. The shutdown will effect all aspects of the service, including its browser extensions, mobile applications, and website.
For people who depend on Pocket to save and organize articles, blog posts, and other online content, it’s a good idea to understand the timeline and start taking steps to keep that data. The service will keep working until June 11, 2025, but users should start now. After that date, Pocket will switch to an export-only mode, giving users a short time to download their saved articles, notes, highlights, and other information.
This export period will end for good on June 08, 2025. After that, all user accounts and their data will be permanently erased. There’s no telling how long it takes to export all the data you’ve gathered, so if you wait until the last day, July 9 of this year is your best bet.
Mozilla has explained how users can export their data so they don’t lose their saved content. Step-by-step instructions will be posted on the Pocket website in the next few months. Users do not need to delete their accounts manually; all data will be automatically wiped from Mozilla on August 14, 2025.
Those on Pocket Premium will also be impacted. Mozilla has promised to give partial refunds to all Premium users, but likely only to those who paid for a year or whose accounts will have time left on the day of the shutdown.
People who pay monthly will no longer be charged, and their subscriptions will stop automatically. They do not need to do anything to get this refund. There’s also no need to do anything for your refund; you will get an automatic partial refund on July 14, 2025. This will get sent back to your original payment method and will be equal to how much of your subscription was left unused.
The integrated Fakespot feature in Firefox, known as Review Checker, will also end on July 01, 2025. Unfortunately, starting today, the Pocket browser extensions will no longer be available to download. If you attempt to access them after that date, you will be sent to the Pocket export page instead. The extensions will keep working in browsers until June 04, 2025, but after that, users will need to remove them manually. Check thehelp pageto find out how to delete it.
The same goes for the Pocket mobile app. It will be removed from app stores on June 05, 2025. Users who already have the app can still reinstall it from their devices until August 17, 2025, but after that, they will need to delete it themselves. It’s a sad end for both services, especially considering Mozilla onlybought Fakespot two years ago.
