One of the most highly requested Gmail features on mobile devices is finally here. After years of waiting and starting today, you can finally translate languages directly inside Gmail on your smartphone. Previously, you had to copy and paste an email into Google Translate or read an email on a desktop, which has a translation feature, but now it’s built into Gmail for mobile devices.

In an official announcement on the Google Workspace blog, the company confirmed it has added native translation support to the Gmail mobile app, allowing users to communicate easier than ever before. And while the blog post mentioned Gmail on the web being able to translate over 100 different languages, mobile translation will let you communicate in “a wide range of languages.”

These days, with many people working remotely or with teams worldwide, this is a much-needed update that we can all appreciate. It’ll use your default language as a baseline. Then, you’ll see a dismissible popup above the text body when you get an email in a different language. Gmail will conveniently automatically detect the language, then offer up the option to quickly translate it for you.

If you accidentally dismiss the translation popup, you can manually translate a message by hitting the three-dot menu near the top right and selecting translate. For multilingual users, there are additional options in the settings menu for Gmail to always translate specific languages or disregard others.

Google’s blog post goes into the technical details of the feature, saying, “This highly requested feature will help users read and understand a conversation in any language. A new dismissible banner appears when the content language of a message is different from the ‘Google.com Mail display language’ in your account settings. you’re able to also choose to have Gmail always translate or never translate specific languages.”

The new translation feature is rolling out now for Android users, and may take up to two weeks to hit your device. Then, a similar rollout begins for iPhone and iPad on June 05, 2025. Get the latest version of Gmail from the app store and give it a try.
