Based on a novel by Margaret Atwood,The Handmaid’s Taleis set in a dystopian future society where the remaining fertile women are forced to bear children for the ruling class, with Elisabeth Moss as the lead. As you might expect, it’s not always easy viewing, but it’s engrossing.
At the time of writing, the sixth and final season is airing and is due to conclude in May 2025. That means now is the perfect time to start watching, just in time to get hooked for the upcoming sequel showThe Testaments.

None of the characters inIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaare likeable, but that’s the whole point of the show. It’s a sitcom about a group of friends who run an Irish bar (unsuccessfully) and the ridiculous situations they find themselves in—often as part of their latest scheme to help themselves.
The dark humor ofAlways Sunnyisn’t for everyone, but give it a try, especially at least until the second season when Danny DeVito arrives. It’s worth it just to see the insane things that he says and does.

Futurama, an animated sci-fi fromThe Simpsons’Matt Groening, started life on Fox in 1999. After several cancellations and different networks, the hilarious show thankfully refuses to die, with Hulu being its current home.
You likely recognize the main characters—pizza delivery boy Fry, robot Bender, and one-eyed Leela—even if you’ve never seen the show, and each episode follows their capers while working for the spaceship-powered delivery company Planet Express in the 31st century.

Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez make for an unusual but wonderful central trio in the lightheartedOnly Murders in the Building, as a group living in a Manhattan apartment building who start a podcast together when a crime occurs (no points for guessing the crime).
It’s funny and charming, with some particularly great guest stars like Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep. Each season revolves around a different and genuinely engaging mystery, and the show isn’t afraid to throw in some peril and touching moments among the fun.

After the President of the United States is killed inParadise, a Secret Service agent (played brilliantly by Sterling K. Brown) is flagged as a suspect, so he takes matters into his own hands to find out what really happened.
Paradiseis gripping and not what you expect, with many twists and turns to keep you engaged. Even saying more about the premise would be a spoiler. The penultimate episode of the first season, which shows a major crisis play out in real-time, is particularly spectacular.

Reservation Dogsis a comedy created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the latter of whom you may know from his work on funny movies likeHunt for the Wilderpeopleand shows likeOur Flag Means Death.
Reservation Dogsis about a group of Indigenous teenagers who are growing up on a rural reservation and trying to find their place in the world. The four young actors are great, and the show is quirky and hilarious while also being heartfelt.

Fargois a show based on the iconic 1996 film, though no familiarity is needed to enjoy this dark comedy crime anthology. Each season has a different story and cast, typically involving hapless individuals who become embroiled with dangerous criminals and the well-meaning police who circle the case.
While I think the show is outstanding, I wasn’t particularly fond of the fourth season. But the great thing aboutFargois that it’s not afraid to mix things up as it moves between time periods, and for me the fifth season was a return to form.

Schitt’s Creekis a Canadian sitcom about a once-wealthy family who lose everything and have to move to a motel in a ridiculously named town. While at first they clash with the locals, the Rose family are forced to adapt to their new way of life.
Schitt’s Creekwas well received when it first aired, but it became a true hit when Netflix picked it up for streaming. Nowadays the show is on Hulu, and it’s a true comfort watch, whether you’re watching it for the first time or the hundredth.

InThe Bear, a celebrated chef at high-class restaurants returns home to run his deceased brother’s sandwich shop, attempting to turn it around in spite of its chaotic and stubborn employees.
While the show has won a comedy Emmy, and it does have humor, it’s more of a drama about the trials and tribulations of working in the service industry and the impact of family trauma. It’s fast-paced and tense, and makes you feel like you’re right there in the kitchen.

Shōgunis a historical epic about a power struggle, inspired by real events and set in Japan at the end of the 16th century. It’s real prestige television. It has political intrigue, an interesting setting, and it looks incredible. There is a lot of Japanese dialogue, so it demands your attention.
The show was originally conceived as a limited series, but it proved so popular that another two seasons have been commissioned. Assuming they’re just as stupendous as the first, we’re in for a treat.
